My Journey Learning Data Protection with Ignite (Scratch & Script Limited)

2 min readApr 23, 2024

Happy Earth Day 🌍!

It’s been a while since I’ve shared about my cybersecurity journey. I recently hit a bit of a roadblock and felt overwhelmed, so I took a break to avoid burnout.

💡Check out my blog post on how to deal with burnout : It’s ok to take a Break

Unfortunately, during that time, I missed an opportunity and wasn’t chosen for a role I was excited about.

However, there’s always a silver lining! I was thrilled to be accepted into the first cohort of the free 7-week Ignite accelerator program on data protection by Scratch and Script.

Congratulation message from Ignite.

Although, I was familiar with the concept of data protection Laws and principles, I hadn’t had the opportunity to apply this knowledge in a practical setting. The Ignite program provided an fanatic opportunity to “delve” (lol) further into these principles, particularly focusing on protecting the privacy of data subjects.

This program covered the fundamentals of Data Protection, including:

  • Introduction to Privacy
  • Application of Principles of Data Protection
  • Application of Rights of Data Subjects
  • Legal Basis for Processing Personal Data
  • Data Protection Impact Assessment
  • Establishing a Privacy Program
  • Project (Data Protection Map and Toolkit)

The hands-on learning was exhilarating, especially when we were tasked with working on a project where my team and I developed a free open-source toolkit called “Policy Notice Template.” This open-source template will enable small firms build their own data privacy notices.

A privacy notice is a document that informs data subjects (customers) about data processing practices and how their data will be processed, protected, and handled.

📍Fun Fact: Did you know organizations handling personal data have 72 hours to notify the NDPC (Nigeria Data Protection Commission) and affected individuals of a data breach? Failure to do so can result in penalties under the NDPA (Nigeria Data Protection Act).

The program brought together participants from various African countries. There was a bit of difficulty navigating different times with team members, but with a little adjustment, it was quickly solved.

I am grateful to Scrip and Scratch, Ignite, and ISACA for organizing this program.

Certificate of Completion

Looking ahead, I’ll continue exploring how best data protection integrates with cybersecurity in businesses. I’ll also be sharing insights on social media and offering support where I can.

Until next time, keep learning and evolving to become the best version of you.

Ciao 🫶🏼
